Department of Anatomy, M.S.Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore, Karnataka, India. Introduction: Odontoid process is a bony projection of axis around which the atlas rotates. It measures 1 to 1.25 cms in length and projects upwards from the body of Axis. An elongated odontoid process may narrow the foramen magnum causing compressive neurological symptoms. It can cause cervical stiffness, serious restrictions of neck movement, and even a bone-derived torticollis. Observation: During routine osteology classes, we encountered an Axis vertebra with an elongated odontoid process. The measurements of the elongated odontoid process were taken using digital Vernier slide calipers. Conclusion: Elongated odontoid process can be mistaken for fracture of dens in radiological images; hence the knowledge of elongated odontoid process is useful for the radiologists, neurosurgeons and orthopaedicians for accurate diagnosis and treatment involving cranio-vertebral junctions.

Finite element stress analysis of a cadaver second cervical vertebra.
A human vertebra was modelled using the finite element method (FEM), to investigate likely sites of failure under prescribed loading. The FEM stress analysis proved that the stress distributions in the second cervical vertebra (axis) are influenced by the direction of the applied load on the anterior surface of the odontoid process. The regions of high compressive stress could be found on the i...

The distinguishing feature of the 2nd cervical vertebra (axis) is presence of odontoid process (dens) which articulates with anterior arch of atlas, and acts as a pivot around which atlas with skull rotates [1]. Severe neck pain and sudden unexpected death may occur due to skeletal abnormalities at the cranio-cervical junction or cervical region and is associated with neurological signs and sym...

The atlas (Fig. 2) does not have a vertebral body – this has been absorbed into the axis vertebra, to form the odontoid process (Fig. 3). A thick anterior arch remains, extending into and joining the two lateral masses, on which are the superior atlantal joint facets, which articulate with the occipital condyles; and the inferior joint facets of the axis. The posterior arch is thinner than the ...

The axis (second cervical vertebra) is unique in possessing the dens or odontoid process and very specialized superior articular facets. The study was carried out to gather the metrical data of this atypical cervical vertebra. A hundred dried intact human axis vertebrae were measured using digital vernier caliper accurate up to 0.01 mm and a goniometer. Various linear and angular measurements o...
